Music - Indie vs Mainstream
INDIE VERSUS MAINSTREAM MUSIC
Music today is
mainly seen as entertainment. Although both of indie and mainstream music are
equally entertaining, they have some different points, especially in terms of
marketing. Indeed, indie and mainstream music have different market
orientation. Mainstream music, in which major lablels sign artists who will be
marketable are basically sell their music based on the profit orientation.
Also, they over-generalize people’s preference by offering the same old songs over
and over.
If you have ever listened to the radio for an extended period of
time, you will notice that almost three or four bands are playing a quite
similar song, no differences at all. Mainstrem music makes the market busy with
the same genre of music. On the other hand, indie music is where the musicians
are actually in it to make art, regardless the less money that they will get if
they could not adjust with the preference of market. Unlike the mainstream
music, indie music makes people looking for new music and refine their own
taste. But ultimately, indie listeners are given choice to have a growing
amount of music to choose from. Clearly, indie music can give such kind of
enlightment to make music merely seen as an art, not just an entertainment.
